Statistics of Racist and Neo-Nazi Crimes in Russia. January - October 2007

In the period of January 1 to October 31, 2007, in Russia, there were no less than 270 racially motivated attacks affecting a total of 472 people, including 53 fatalities. Last year in the same period, there were 220 attacks with 447 victims, 48 of them dying as a result.

Moscow (32 murdered and 137 injured), St. Petersburg (5 murdered and 86 injured) and Nizhny Novgorod (1 murdered and 34 injured) remain the major centers of racist violence.

St. Petersburg stands out also because of four episodes connected with explosives (two attempted and two actual explosions).

From January to October, 2007, there were no less than 18 court decisions in connection with racist violence. In total, 41 people were convicted.

There were no less than 21 verdicts against people accused of spreading hate materials, a figure 4 more than in the whole 2006.

Besides, in 2007, for the first time in the 5 years of existence of the anti-extremist legislation, there were lists of the publications published acknowledged by court as extremist. At the moment these official lists contain 30 materials, the majority of which are anti-Semitic. However, we know about 10 more court decisions concerning not less than 36 publications.
