On July 17, 2007, the SOVA Center finally found out the precise information about the criminal charges initiated against the organization in response to the complaint of Andrey Savelyev.
The confusion has been caused by the fact that there are two separate cases.
Firstly, charges in connection with libel (article 129 of the Criminal Code) were indeed initiated. According to Elena Perfilova from the press-service of the Central district police department of Moscow, the case is now being investigated by the police department of the Tverskoy district of Moscow. However, we still don't know which particular SOVA publication forms the basis for the charges.
Secondly, the Prosecutor's Office of the Central district of Moscow is still in the process of reviewing about 10 publications which reported on Savelyev's party :Great Russia;, including SOVA Center reports, to find out whether they incite social hatred (article 282), and consequently whether they should initiate charges against those responsible for those publications.
Meanwhile, the :Russian project; of :The United Russia; party has removed the banner of the Savelyev's magazine :Zolotoj Lev; (:Golden Lion;) from its website. It was our commentary on this banner, on the basis of which Savelyev filed his complaint with the Prosecutor's Office.
