This database catalogs violent crimes classified by SOVA Center as hate crimes, i.e., crimes we recognize as motivated by prejudice against a particular group or by ideological motives typical of the far right. This category includes crimes committed due to racial, ethnic, or religious hatred, hatred based on sex, gender identity, or sexual orientation, and hatred toward groups perceived by the ultra-right as hostile, including political opponents and individuals with lifestyles they deem unacceptable, often based on appearance. Our classification of a crime as motivated by such hatred does not necessarily align with its legal qualification, if any.
Data have been systematically entered into the database since 2007. The database does not include data from the republics of the North Caucasus and, until 2016, Crimea. Victims of mass fights are also not included in the data.
Any number of database parameters can be applied as filters. Let us review some of these parameters.
The Period field offers two modes for setting dates. In the default mode, you can select a specific year or a combination of year and month. To set an exact date range with specific start and end dates, click the calendar icon to switch modes.
Type of victim reflects the attacker’s perception of the victim, to the best of our knowledge, and does not imply any objective categorization. Some categories are based on supposed geographic origin, others on appearance. "Ideological opponents" include individuals or groups viewed by the ultra-right as hostile due to beliefs or style. "Jews" are identified as an ethnic group rather than a religious one. "Moral enemies" refers to individuals who, according to the ultra-right, "degrade the race," such as alcoholics, drug users, and homeless people.
The citizenship of the victim is recorded in the database only if known.
You can select the rows and columns for displaying the results, with any filter parameters available as row and column options in the resulting table.
You can also specify whether to use the minimum or maximum number of victims in the count, as in some cases the exact number of victims is unknown and has been entered as an estimated range.
The numbers in each table cell are clickable. Clicking brings up below the table a list of related news items from the website corresponding to the data in that cell. However, not all violent acts are covered in published news, often due to concerns for informant or victim safety or because information is substantially incomplete. As a result, table entries may show a higher number of crimes than those described in the news items displayed below the table.
