Activist Killed As Nazis Attack Anti-Nuclear Camp in Siberia

In the early morning of July 21 2007, neo-nazi skinheads launched an attack on an anti-nuclear protest camp in Angarsk, Siberia.

The activists in their sleeping bags and tents were violently attacked with iron rods, knives and air pressure guns. The attackers were crying out slogans, such as :Rightwing! Anti-afa!;

21-year-old Ilya Borodaenko, an antifascist from Nachodka, suffered a head fracture during the attack and later died in hospital from injuries. At least nine other campers were reported to have been seriously injured, one of whom has had both his legs broken. Tents were set on fire and some belongings were stolen.

The camp started last week and is aimed at protesting against a planned centre of uranium enrichment in Angarsk. The organizers of the camp had planned various rallies in the surrounding area.

Recent police statements have mentioned that 12 attackers have been arrested, and at least 13 others have been identified. The police initiated charges of hooliganism (article 213 of the Criminal Code) and grievous bodily harm leading to death (part 4, article 111).

Police initially believed robbery to be the reason for the attack and saw no political motive (because some personal belongings of the camp activists were found on the arrested attackers). However, some of the policemen have admitted the fact that the perpetrators of the attack were neo-nazis.
