Moscow nazis interrupt political debate in "Bilingua" club

On February, 28, 2007 Moscow nazis interrupted political debate in "Bilingua" club.

The monthly debate is one of the few independent political events in Moscow and is organised by the Democratic Alternative (DA) political movement.

During the discussion about 15 nazis from National Socialist Society and a movement called Format 18 started to shout "Sieg Heil" and to give nazi salutes. Maxim Martsinkevich (alias Tesak, which means "hatchet"), one of their leaders, demanded the floor and finally was given it to yell nazi and anti-liberal slogans.

The most recent discussion theme was "Where are the democrats?" and the debaters were Maxim Kononenko, a pro-Kremlin journalist, and Julia Latynina, a liberal journalist. The discussion wouldn't have attracted much attention but for a provocation by the Nazis. Maria Gaidar, one of the debate organizers, but not the person chairing it, started to shout "No way to fascism", but was poorly supported perhaps because the audience did not know what to do or how to counteract the nazis who obviously wanted to provoke a fight but who, after not achieving it, left the club.

Neither the club's security nor the police - who arrived when the nazis were already on their way out - did anything to stop the 20 minutes long nazi intervention.

This is the first time that nazis have invaded such an event simply to make a provocation. It shows that the political picture is changing and those, like Tesak, who used to be marginal, have started to operate in a larger field.
